Subject: Age/Pecking Order

I am 51. I vaguely remember crossing the EL & occasionally having to wait
for trains in Ashland, Ohio on the way to my grandparent’s. I also crossed
the EL on Rte. 4 on the way to & from college in Columbus, OH. Now I live in
Huntington, In. Unfortunately, I came here in 1976, too late for EL, but I
did see some Erie Western & Chicago & Indiana action. I married into an Erie
family & began to learn about the railroad & its operations from my
father-in-law. I did get to ride in the cab of an ex-Chessie SD-18 from
Monterey, IN to North Judson when a segment of the main line was operated by
the Tippecanoe RR. I was also director of the Erie Band in Huntington from
1979 to 1986. The band has been in existence since 1915 when it was started
at the division HQ. It continues today with support by the city of
Huntington.
