On the EL I never saw a fax machine.
After Conrail, the Mahoning Division retained the Divn Hdq and DS Office in
the Binama Building (Erie Terminal Building) and the former PC side retained
the Valley Division in the Stambaugh Building. Distance apart was two blocks.
The Valley Division had a fax machine and important reports, such as a car
failure or personal injury report had to be walked to the former PC office and
transmitted.
When the Youngstown Division was formed in the fall of 1979, there was one
fax machine in the DS office and it was 'labor intensive' to operate. Hand
start, hand stop, cut the paper for receiving, place the original in a plastic
sleeve when transmitting. It was about the size of two microwave ovens. A
far cry from today's fax machines.
