RE: (erielack) pecking order/members ages

72 - Worked two summers (while going to college) - 1951 and 1952 - as extra
yard clerk in Erie's North Yard, Jersey City, NJ. Office/yard across the
tracks (passenger terminal throat) from the roundhouse. At that time all(?)
commmuter service was steam altho the yard and the few mailine locomotives
we saw were diesel. Lots of steam during rush hours. Busy place.

Non-Erie/EL: Rode Pennsy/NY&LB to Red Bank many times earlier -- WW II
era -- behind K4s south of South Amboy. Also saw CNJ camelbacks at Red
Bank.

Railfanning with high school railfan friend around yards in Jersey City, saw
a bit of steam, most memorable probably was a CNJ 0-4-0 camelback switcher
(not under steam) at their roundhouse!

I am not particularly a steam fan (electric is more to my interest), but I
can certainly understand the 'romance' of steam. There is just something
about those big machines. I can remember seeing K4s at Red Bank sitting in
the station and hearing them 'breathing' -- air compressor sound. And in
cold weather with the steam lingering in the air - - -
