On the NY Division WJ tower Ridgewood Jct, Ridgewood, NJ had a small model
Signal control box located on the Opr's desk that had controlled the Telephone
Train Order signals at BT Coalburg Jct., Saddle Brook, NJ at the interchange
yard of EL and NYS & W railroad.
If I remember these signals were located below the Automatic Block Signals
just east of the pull out spring switch at BT and just west of the facing point
eastbound crossovers at BT.
They were for stopping freight trains to come on the local telephone for
instructions (like the nys&w just delivered a track of east or west bound cars one
could have the closest freight stop and make a pick up on).
With radios and a I believe an accident in the Elmira, NY area with a Pennsy
Crew operating on El tracks they took the T. O. Signal (position light) to
convey block indication as a clear signal and rear ended a stopped freight train
in the next block ignoring the Stop and proceed signal they had. Right after
that the T. O. signals were removed from service at PO, SF and WJ in the
seventies during the EL time period I believe.
Any comments?
