There was a very laong paper on the proposed design of the bridge across the
Hudson to Manhatten in the Proceedings of the Soiciety of Civil Engineers back
in the early 1900's. It incuded discussion, maps, critiques, etc.
As I recall the bridge was to be 8 tracks wide. Aside from the technical
problems of the bridge itself, one of the major problems was the huge amount of
real eastate that would be required on Manhatten Island for the descending
ramp. terminal tracks, locomotive turning facilities, terminal building, etc.
