RE: Signal Question (was RE: (erielack) Odd signal)

Usually the "2J" would stand for the track and the line. "2" means "track 2" and the "J" might be the one-letter indicator of the NJ&NY?

Subject: Signal Question (was RE: (erielack) Odd signal)

Just a related question about signals on the Ex-Erie (this is the
Pascack
Valley Line)- there is a signal in Park Ridge marked 23 (over) 2J. 23 I
believe was the miles to Jersey City (or Hoboken?) What does the 2J
mean?
The only thing I can think of is that 2J might have been a reference "2
miles to the Hillsdale yard" but that yard has been gone for 50 years...

The signal is facing trains headed southbound (towards Hoboken).

On the topic of interesting signals, the NJ&NY still had semaphores that
I
can recall (2 on a tower just north of the Park Ridge station, one just
south of the Woodcliff Lake station, and another in Hillsdale by the
cement
company lead)up until the early 1980's.
