Most of it was 60 feet per mile (I'll leave the math to the reader as an 
exercise). Keep in mind when discussing grades there is much more to 
consider beyond simple rise and fall. Curvature is a major component of 
the equation when figuring what the tonnage rating of a locomotive will 
be as well. So on two identical grades of equal length, a one to one 
comparison is meaningless unless you also factor in the number and 
degree of any non-tangent stretches of track.
