RE: (erielack) A new set of EL questions

I looked up an article in one of my old tTRAINS magazines STEAM OUT OF
SCRANTON. Mid-60s I think. Lots of great fotos & suff about DL&W steam that
even Taber didn't have in his book.
The DL&W had it's own lab for testing across Cedar ave. from the old
Laurel Line station - I believe tha building still exists. These guys did
tests that showed for every 3 tons of coaal that went across the stoker
table, only 2 of them contributed to the thermal efficiency of the engine.
One of them was simply blasted up the stack - the locomotive was working
that hard.
In an earlier post, I mentioned when I was about 4 or 5 uears old, my
aunt & uncle took me to Scranto on a shopping trip & what dide I want to
do??? Watch the trains!! So off to Linden st bridge & just at this point,
here came a double header headed up the hill. In spite of the adults
warnings, I stuck my head over the railing & got a facefull of soot,
cinders, etc from the hard-working engines. Shrieking in fear & pain, I was
taken to the lobby of the Casey where my face & eyes were washed off. I wish
I could do this again (not sticking my head into the stack, though).

Regards to all,

Walter E. Smith
