I've seen varied accounts of steepness for the DL&W grades, but here goes:
Steepest: Scranton-Tobyhanna: 1.62% (eastbound)
Longest: Analomink-Tobyhanna: 21 miles, 1.45% (westbound)
Honorable mention: Scranton (Bridge 60)-Clark's Summit: 1.46% (westbound)
By comparison, Erie had a relatively easy time of it with it's 1.2%
eastbound climb to Gulf Summit.
Speaking of Erie, it's remarkable that this roller-coaster RR had only one
mainline tunnel (Otisville). But when you think of Erie, you think bridges:
Moodna, Belfast, Fillmore, Portage, Kinzua and of course, Starrucca; the
road had more than it's share of impressive bridges and viaducts. The first
three mentioned were built to accomodate a second track that never came.
