Steve,
When they were doing weekend work during the 1970s in anticipation of the
re-electrification they would run them up the Morristown Line. However, I
guess they could have still run the MUs as a shuttle service between Summit
and Gladstone without de-energizing the catenary on the branch. Does
anyone recall if diesel service was substituted? I know that they
sometimes substituted buses (yuck) instead on the Gladstone Branch.

:) Yep I saw same on the Less Frequent but still Exciting runs these
beasts made on the Morristown line and even the Gladstone Br :-
They occasional showed up on the Gladstone Branch if they were doing
catenary work or if there happened to be a major ice/snowstorm.....They
appeared numerous times during the Blizzard in March of 1993 and the
numerous ice storms of January 1994......
They also ran on the branch once a day during rush hour in the summer of
1984.......Anyone know if the U-34's ever made it to Gladstone in the
1970's???
