Todd/All,
I'm curious if you know whether the conversion from freight to passenger
and back was a flip of the switch, or was there a more involved procedure?
Since the original intention was for EL to use them for both purposes it
would seem inefficient for it to have required a trip to the shop. I
wonder if all U34CHs were set-up this way, or was that an option that was
factory-installed for EL/NJDOT? Final question: do any of these creatures
still exist anywhere in operation?

Love the stories about the U34CH's, but in freight service I recall they
actually sounded just like any other U-boat of that class. When setup for
passenger service they were powering the HEP at high idle.
It's intresting, CNJ ended up getting GP40P's. Imagine if EL purchased
those instead! I heard B&O was behind that purchase with the notion they
could adapt them for freight service if the CNJ shed assests after
liqudation.
