I seem to think you're correct; the EL went on the spark arrestor rampage in the mid-to-late 1960s (remember those silver ones on GP7s?).

By the way, Details West now makes a similar white metal detail part - a semi-circular rounded "tube" that has the texture of mesh on it (but it too is a solid part). I've never been satisfied with any of the solid parts, since the mesh appearance of the prototype is so distinctive, and I'd love to capture that on a model.

I think one could scratchbuild the mesh screen using styrene strip for the frame, using small mesh cemented on, then rolling it to make a 180-degree arch.
