Re: (erielack) Village of Underwood

This info is from a paper clipping regarding the abandonment of Underwood
Village. The Pittston Company, the lessee of all Pennsylvania Coal Company
properties in the 1930s, announced in July 1936, that the 23 company houses in
Underwood had to be evacuated by October 1st. "Reasons given for the order are
that the ground occupied by the houses is needed for extensions of the colliery
refuse dump, that a vein of coal under the houses is being worked, and that
transportation facilities are much better than when the houses were built more
than 20 years ago."
