The design of the 10/5's was such to places the higher priced double bedrooms in the center of the car and the roometts over the trucks.  It was an attempt to make the ride quieter for the DBR passengers.

But why did you need to lose a bedroom?  The Nickel Plate Road 10-6 sleepers have the bedrooms at the center of the cars and 5 roomettes at each end - it appears to be a good design.
