(erielack) (Caldwell Branch) CORRECTION: WR Tower

Need to make a correction to my message about Manual Block and the Caldwell
Branch. WR Tower in West Arlington, NJ was "semi-closed" by the EL in 1972,
not 1974. Before that, WR was open from 7am to 11pm. After that, was open
only when a boat was expected (reflecting change in Coast Guard rules
regarding procedures to open the bridge; previously was on-demand until
11PM, now required an advance call for an opening any time of day).

Also, got an interesting note from Bill Sheppard (thanks as always for the
great EL info) about how, on weekends during the steam days, the commuter
equipment (incldg. Pacifics and "gun barrel" 4-6-0s) would be moved from
Essex Fells to the siding in Caldwell, to be stored there until Monday AM.
Was then backed up to Essex Fells for the morning rush (to the degree that
you could call it a "rush hour" on the Caldwell Branch). That does explain
the weekend pix of Pacifics in Caldwell. Wonder what the reason was? To
keep the M&E interchange open at Essex Fells on Sat. & Sunday? Did they
interchange on weekends? Maybe, given that Whippany Paperboard was once a
busy customer.
