(erielack) That ugly red paint

Does anyone know who decided to paint EL buildings in that red barn paint (boxcar red)? Here on the West End (Marion to Chicago) the first structures I can remember getting the red spray job were the Kenton, Ohio station and HN Tower about 1968 or 1969. Gradually every building on the West End was painted red with the exception of the Ohio City, Ohio and Monterey, Indiana stations which remained in the Erie green and cream colors right till the end. The red paint seemed to be much less widespread on the East End. Did someone in management decide since red was a durable color for boxcars and barns lets try it on buildings? The Sherwin-Williams Paint company and the EL both had offices in the Midland Building in Cleveland - did management get a good deal on some surplus red barn paint?
