What a great photo!

Anybody have the Sanborn map for that area? I have the one that covers
the area just south of there... :-(
One of those articles about the burning of the building
http://www.jerseycityhistory.net/breakingnews-6.html
is by Helen Stapinski, author of "Five Finger Discount." It's a
hard-nosed and sometimes scary memoir of growing up in Jersey City in
the 50s and 60s. Her dad worked at the Union Terminal and fed the family
in high style with lobster and steak the "fell off the back of the truck."
An interesting companion book is the oft-menitioned "One Track" by
Beatrice O'Brien, the first part of which is set in the same
neighborhoods near the CNJ and Erie yards, but 30 years earlier.
After the fire they of course tore the building down. You can see what's
left of it if you take the left-most toll booth on the way into the
Holland Tunnel: like the Maxwell House factory in nearby Hoboken, it's
now a huge pile of ground up bricks.
Back to the photo, many questions:
What is all that wood stacked around the PRR reefer in the foreground?
Could it be cedar, for insulation? And what does that writing on the
left side of the reefer say? It almost looks like it says "Harmonica
Lady." Huh? Or is that on the negative?
Note the other reefer at the right end of the loading dock of the UT
building.
What direction are we looking in this photo? Is that building on the
right still there? What year is it? Where is the Holland Tunnel entrance
in relation to the building?
Thanks for posting Paul!
