Freight train increase concerns Republican Club
Meeting will discuss local impact of Port Newark improvements
By Michael Daigle, Daily Record

HANOVER -- Will improvements at Port Newark send more, longer freight
trains, some carrying New York City garbage through Morris County?

The Republican Club of Morristown will try again to present information to
help Morris County residents get a straight answer.

The issue was raised in May by residents of Union and Middlesex counties
who claimed that the reactivation of abandoned rail lines in those
counties would result in long trains carrying freight and New York City
garbage through Morris County on the NJ Transit line.

GOP Club president Linda Murphy said Wednesday the club will host a
meeting at the Morris County Library in Hanover at 7 p.m., July 11.
Somerset County's Peter Palmer, who is also chairman of the freight
committee of the North Jersey Regional Planning Authority, is guest
speaker.

The Morristown & Erie Railway, headquartered in Morristown, is
redeveloping the Rahway Valley and Staten Island Rail Lines under contract
to Union County. The Rahway line runs to Summit.

Morristown & Erie officials said they expect to run some freight trains
from Morris to the port in Newark and Elizabeth because they have Morris
customers who need that service.

Palmer, and other officials, including those from the Morristown & Erie,
said that while the county is expected to see some increased fright
shipments, no long freight trains or ones hauling garbage will be passing
through Morris County.

Bob Sheehan and Stewart Weiss, representatives of the Inman Railroad
Committee, which opposes the plan, laid out this scenario: With the
connection of the tracks between Cranford and Summit complete, it is a
short jump to NJ Transit's Morris & Essex Line, which runs through the
center of Morris County.

That line is expected to connect with the Lackawanna Cutoff, a
discontinued rail line between Roxbury and the Delaware River, that is the
subject of a $350 million rebuilding plan.

Tom Drabic, Sussex County's transportation planner, said residents of
Union and Middlesex counties should not be trying to garner support for
their efforts in Morris and Sussex counties by spreading misinformation.
