Well, Frank, it's hard to say WHAT this building was for. I've seen some brickworks & they're usually much bigger in area than this. When u consider that this area was early on involved in the industrial revolution in the USA, there's huge stone & concrete bldgs. all over the Lackawanna & Wyoming valleys. I roamed around many of them as a kid (40s & 50s) withi=out the knowledge of my dad of course. I have a pretty good feeling how the Vandals felt when they came across Roman ruins in the dark ages.......... No idea what they were & thought they were built by 'giants'. There were many abandoned breakers, pumphouses, hoisting engines, & they ALL looked like this when I saw them. Many have been covered by 'development' now, but if u know where to look, you can see how our recent ancestors built the infrastructure we stand upon today. I'm kind of surprised that STEAMTOWN doesn't run a kind of 'archeological tour' of the area. The Laurel Line alone still has lots of ROW & I don't just mean the restored tunnel. There's a tunnel under the DL&W mainline at Keyser Valley curve on the North side of the highway. Faced with stone, it was built by the NYO&W to pass under the 'DL' & gain access to the back valley & the LVRR connection. I was thinking the structure u pictured might have been used as a pumphouse for draining the mine workings or to power a big ventilator shaft that may lurk in the underbrush........BE CAREFUL out there.
