I had wondered what had happened to train 77; it became NY-97. This train was HOT, with intermediate times almost as fast as NY-99. I remember it handling a lot of Plan I (motor carrier) traffic, including Navajo Trucking, that presumably didn't make the 99 cutoff at Croxton. A great reference is the V15#2 issue of the Diamond, which describes operations at the pig terminal in Chicago. You get some idea of what EL was up against where the author recounts how the Plan I traffic dropped off with the opening of I-80. This permitted a truck to get from Chicago to NY in 16 hours, with dock to dock time a full day faster than what EL was able to accomplish.
