(erielack) Lackawanna's Rockaway Loop to finally return?

Folks,

Today's Morris County (NJ) Daily Record had a big article about the fact that the State finally got the go-ahead to rebuild the VERY old concrete overpasses that take NJ State Route 46 over NJ State Route 15, the former CNJ Dover & Rockaway (today's M&E) and the former DL&W/EL main (today's NJT). It's going to be an apparently large project, involving purchase demolition of several buildings (including the famed Travelers' Diner). This also is the death knell for the former CNJ through the center of Dover, as the new bridge will be considerably lower and won't allow for clearance over the tracks (the former DL&W will remain untouched by this).

The "workaround" for the removal of the CNJ is to relay the west end of the former DL&W "Rockaway Loop" and connect it up with the CNJ at the south side of Rockaway. There currently aren't any customers on the portion of the line to be abandoned.

No need to rush to get pictures, however - the process to purchase the properties/land to start the construction will take at least 18 months. They estimate a completion date of the project of 2010 or 2011 - at that rate, the Cut-Off might be done sooner ;)
