Big, older engines like this are relatively inexpensive to purchase. If in fact it's suffered a major failure sufficient to call for retirement, it should be even cheaper. Ballpark $25,000 or so. For a locomotive, that's nothing. Hard to say what the market is exactly, going by what I was told. Tunnel motors tend to be cheaper than a plain SD40-2; I think because of it's larger size this unit would be cheaper as well. In other words, preservation is not out of the reach of possibilities, if the unit's been retired. With scrap up and demand for leasers down somewhat it could go in any direction at this point.
