Re: (erielack) Three Questions - , JC Penney Cars

The boxcars loaded by JCPenney (PENNEX) in Ridgefield, NJ were destined to Los Angeles, Oakland, Phoenix and Salt Lake City. The majority of the cars were destined for the first two California locations. Loading was through the cars on the track adjacent to the loading platform to the cars on the second track. Due to poor and inconsistent transit service via boxcar, these destinations were ultimately changed to TOFC via Penn Central and then changed again to over-the-road to Chicago for western railroad TOFC service to destination.

Prior to the opening of this JCPenney operated facility, these destinations were loaded into boxcars by a contractor at a PRR/Penn Central facility in Manhattan and floated to New Jersey. Additional points were loaded by another contractor in Hoboken, all routed TOFC, via EL for westbound destinations.

I was employed by JCPenney in the Traffic Department during the above time frame. Hope the above is helpful.
