Re:(erielack) Phoebe, on the Metro North
Phillip - The other point in reference the Phoebe Snows (#3 and 6) was that
there were designed, marketed, and operated as premier daylight train
between Buffalo and intermediate points. The December 1954 schedules, for
example, show WB #3 lv Hobo 1035 AM arr Bflo 650 PM. EB #6 lv Bflo 1015 AM
arr Hobo 630 PM. Allow 20 or 25 minutes for the Ferry to/from Barclay
Street, etc.
The NYC scheduled its #51, the Empire State Express, to leave NYC (GCT) 900
AM arrr Bflo 450PM.
Eastbound NYC 90, the Chicagoan, left Bflo 1010 AM (though this was
dependent on its arrival from Chicago @ 950 AM -- the late trains of today's
era were not tolerated in the past) arr NYC (GCT) 640 PM. NYC 96, the
Advance Empire State Express, originated at andleft Bflo 1150 AM arr NYC
(GCT) 835 PM. The DL&W and NYC running times were comparable.
The Erie had discontinued passenger service to Buffalo in 1951.
In 1954 the LV scheduled 3 trains daily each way between Bflo and NYC
(Penn Station). Eastbound LV #10 lv Bflo 1040AM arr NYC (Penn) 830 PM, LV 4
lv Bflo 845 PM arr NYC (P) 755 AM, #8 Lv Bflo 1130 PM arr NYC (P) 900 AM.
Westbound #9 Lv NYC(P) 1055 AM arr Bflo 840 P, LV #7 Lv NYC (P) 810 P arr
Bflo 535 AM, LV #11 lv NYC (P) 1150 P arr Bflo 1045 AM.
The DL&W, BTW, scheduled EB #'s 2,6,8, and 10to leave Bflo 420
AM*, 1015 AM, 1100 PM, and 530 PM Daily [#4 operated Sunday in place of #2
leave Bflo 430 AM arr Hobo 240 P) and arrive Hobo at 120 PM, 630 PM, 730 AM,
and 530 AM. Westbound #3, 5, 7, and 15 lv Hobo 1035 AM, 450 PM*, 820 PM,
and 1255 AM (*# 25 operated in place of #5 lv Hobo 450 PM,arr Bflo 1128 PM)
and arriving Bflo 650 PM, 205 AM, 450 AM, and 1235 PM.
As to through cars #3 carried (car #30) a Hobo-Chgo sleeper which
was forwarded on NKP 5.
#5 carried a Hobo-Detroit sleeper (car 50) which was forwarded on NYC
47-375. #7 carried a Hobo-Chgo sleeper (car #70) and a Hobo-Chgo reclining
seat coach, both of which were forwarded on NKP 7 from Buffalo.
Eastbound #2 carried a Detroit-Hoboken sleeper(car 440) from NYC
#44. #8 carried a Chicago-Hoboken sleeper (Car 80) and a Chgo-Hobo recling
seat coach, both from NKP #8. #10 carried Chgo-NY sleeper (car 60) from NKP
6.
I remember the DL&W as a really first-classthrough line intercity
passenger operation and think the above schedules from the diesel-era show
what could be done before the impact of the Federal war on passenger
railroading entered the end game.
