(erielack) Lackawanna in new Weird NJ

Folks,

The new issue of "Weird NJ" magazine just arrived today. They have a three page section called "Mystery Trains." There's quite a bit of DL&W-relevant content in here:

- - "The Ghost of the Mennen Arena" - a short story of "ghost train lights" on the spur off the Morris & Essex to Mennen arena in Morris Plains, NJ

- - "The Byram Rail Road Tunnel" - a short story about the Roseville Tunnel on the Cut-Off. The author claims "the tunnel was built by accident - in 1909, the original plan was to cut through the hillside but when they started work they found the rock was too brittle for that, so the 1000-foot tunnel became plan B." Is this correct?

- - "The Warren County Train Wreck and Plaque" - about the plaque marking the wreck of the train of German immigrants at Rockport in 1925 (there was actually a small softcover book written about this)

- - "East Orange Train Station Still Stands Tall" - hey, lister Scott Lupia's photo that was posted to here a few months back is now in Weird NJ - nice job, Scott!

There are also some humorous (to me, at least) articles about the "Camden Train Yard", the "Winslow Railyard," and "Abandoned trains along the Delaware & Raritan Canal." Of course, the former two are referring to the storage areas on the Southern RR of New Jersey, and the latter is referring to the URHS equipment stored at Milford, but the article makes both these sites seem like "train graveyards." Heh. :)

You can pick up the magazine at Barnes & Noble or Borders.
