The DL was again very very lucky, the RR was covered with 7-10' of
water over a 3 mile strip in the Gap. The rip rap that the
Lackawanna put down in 1955 after Hurricane Diane saved us in
September with Ivan and again this time! There have been 4 record
floods in the last 100 years 1903, Hurricane Diane (which took out
the DL&W) in 1955, Hurricane Ivan in Sept 2004 and now this "storm"
which rates as the #3 worst flooding in the Water Gap, 3 1/2' more
than Ivan. The work the DL did in September held great. With the
scouring we have now the Lackawanna's 1955 rip rap stayed in place
however about 3' of ballast was washed out from under about 300' of
track by an "eddy". The water went down late Monday and other than
a lot of debris, there was nothing else, both times we presume that
the water rose & went back down slowly. Amazingly, the ballast line
that we put in in September was not even disturbed! DL crews and a
work train will be in the area through Friday. We have 28 cars at
Slateford Jct. Yard, but they remained high & dry, the river & RR
break away from each other at the Point of Gap, and the RR goes
upgrade away from the river. We should be back open by Friday or
Saturday with an expect run to Slateford on Sunday. We have heard
that NS' Portland Secondary had some in trouble in the Martin Creek
area, and they have not been to Portland since the flood.

Thats great to hear that you will back up and running so soon,
one thing you can say about DL&W that they built one of the best
railroads beds in the country Maybe the best in the country.
Considering a lot of the trackage, buildings and bridges are over a
100 years old or close to it is a testament to show they knew what
they were doing, its a pity that they are not around today they can
show Amtrak or NJ Transit on how to run a railroad.
