Have seen similar dents in the ends of box cars where a load of utility poles have shift en-route or while switching and slide forward with great force. I do have trouble at work with freshly creosoted loads of poles sliding forward. One way of fixing the problem is to tie down a good hand brake and using a loaded car in front of the engine hit the car and watch the poles slide back into place. You hit the car from the opposite end that the poles shift and the impact just sort of slides the car under the pole loads. It can me a bit amazing to watch at times.
