To all listers:
Just received this and wanted to pass it on, as it is very interesting. Hope
the copy of the DS sheet at the bottom transmits OK.
JJBoehner
..this was sent via the O&WRHS and shows the operation on the very last day
of the New York, Ontario & Western R'wy...March 29, 1957....48 years ago today
What is interesting is that for all practical purposes it looks like almost
any other day. The Norwich to Oswego train went up with 6 cars and brought down
25, which would have included the Fulton switcher and caboose. But the Fulton
Switcher handled 17 cars.
At Norwich, the 805 left at 9:12pm (last train out of Norwich) with 19 cars.
It appears then that perhaps 11 cars went to the DL&W (or ??) as ON-2 went
south with 25, the Rome job came in with 4 and the Oneida job 1. Standing in
Smyrna or Earlville you would have seen 6 trains.
Look at the Delhi job, left with 1 car and brought back 6....makes me wonder
what they did with it, unless it was actually the caboose (which is most
probable)
The 803 / 821 delivered 81 cars to Coxton....on the last day ! and then
returned to Mayfield, and went out as timetable NE-6 with 12 !
The Kingston Job went up with 11 cars and brought back 12.
Even the Port Jervis / Monticello job handled 8 cars ! (or six if you take it
account for caboose)
North of Norwich it appears they handled 30 cars, with an additional 19
Norwich -north cars going down on NO-10 = 49 cars. Much more than the NYSW does now
on the Utica side in a day.
Note also the movement of ERIE 437 on the Pine Bush job.
With this ERIE turn, there were 10 trains to be seen if you stood north of
Middletown that day, with one coming in from the south (WN-9).
Not bad for a dead railroad.
Our thanks to Ed Lewis and Russell Hallock for sharing this, and the good
folks of the O&WRHS for sending it out for us today and preserving the history
and heritage of the railroad.
May we not forget the O&W !
from Russell Hallock (O&WRHS)Many years ago Ed. Lewis, who wrote the
shortline guides, was kind enough to send me a photocopy of the dispatcher's sheet
from the last day of operations, March 29, 1957. I donated it to the archives
but haven't seen it in a long time. I did make a summary of the train movements
that day and have copied it below.
