I used to work with a couple of O&W enginemen who'd migrated to the ERIE or DL&W when the O&W folded & they were great guys. From what I've seen in photos it looks like the bankrupt railroad was in pretty good shape. The right of way was never overgrown with weeds, and clean diesels switched and hauled it's freight. Anyone see a photo of a dirty O&W locomotive? Was it really HELL? All the former O&W employee's seemed to hold "Their" railroad in high reguard. Or did the passage of time gleen over the harsh conditions? Can you imagine in 1954 the railroad was up for sale, the cost $4,600,000. At that time it was only moving about 183,000 tons of online traffic a year. Hey, even the Erie Railroad purchased a few former units!
