This is criminally off list content, but it must be addressed. The GG1, R1, DD2 and modified P5a were all PRR designs. Loewy contributed only to the GG1. He started with an established configuration and cleaned it up through rearrangement of details and introduction of welding the carbody. He modified the air intakes, rounded the "shoulders", and straightened the top line of the cab windows, doors and ventilators. He created the lettering and striping scheme. He created a classic, but the mechanical arrangement was already there. The story of the GG1 and its predecessors and competitors has been well, truly and thoroughly documented by Zimmermann, Middleton, Pennypacker and others in book after book and article after article. The original P5s were never rebuilt and ran millions of miles, as did boxcabs on NH, N&W, VGN, GN and MILW. All shovel-nosed diesels (CB&Q) and electrics (CNS&M;IT) and all electric MU cars and all high-speed interurban and all gas-electrics ran with the engineer right up in the front right corner. Now, please -- please -- please -- back to EL! OK: Erie gas-electrics, Lackawanna MUs, and EL push-pulls ran or run that way, too. Loewy had a lot more to do with the GG1 design than just eliminating the rivets. He created the entire shape, no doubt with an admonition that the location of the crew had to be moved back from the boxcab location. PRR decided to build the first one with rivets. I don't know what Loewy had to say when he saw it, but I do know he was. . . .uh . . .demonstrably upset. It is fair to say that he did cause the rest to be built with welded carbodies. Someone else has explained about Shotwelding being a Budd tradename. SGL ------------------------------
