Does anyone know why they're in two separate number series? (or were the 888x units renumbered to 897x series? According to a roster that I picked up somewhere on the Net, the "SD45-2s" that are in the 8800 series have been rebuilt with 16 cylinder blocks and classified SD40-2s. This makes some sense, since CSX number series already has "stock" SD40-2s in that 8800 series. The 8900s retain their 20 cylinder blocks - 8973 (3672), 8974 (3673), and 8976 (3680) are apparently the only three remaining on CSX with the original blocks. This roster also shows that all six of the NS 1700s have been rebuilt with 16 cylinder blocks. It does not show whether the two R&N units have the original blocks, or not.
