I was working on the list processor and inadvertantly caused a problem which
caused some messages to not make it to the list. By crawling the mail log and
some list processor debugging files I managed to recover the following
messages, but not their subject lines.
I apologize for any inconvenience thuis may have caused.

Is there any website where you can look up the names of Pullman cars? For
example, if I come upon a reference to Pullman car name "xxxxx" or have a model
with the name "yyyy", where I could I look it up to see whether a car by that
name really existed, and if so the type of car, regular service, history, etc?
Thanks.

Steve,
The name Will Stanley doesn't ring a bell. I remember Cal Banse & John =
Short, the Willamons (father & son) at SN Jct. &an operator named Rich. =
There was a woman named 'Millie' in the dispatchers office. Oh, yes, I =
just found a color slide of Mr. Fenstermacher at the dispatchers table =
in Youngstown showing the PBX fone machine in front of him.
As for ur question about the backup moves on the Northern line of =
the former ERIE...........I described them pretty much in the previous =
post. IE backing from the Northern line onto the ERIE mainline on the =
way into Hoboken & vice-versa on the way back toNyack. There was another =
backup move when we had to take equipment from Hoboken terminal to ERIE =
Jersey City acct lack of room in Hoboken. This involved use of a =
tailhose & backing past Terminal tower, then Grove St. tower & finally =
at Henderson street tower, there was a track on the North side of the =
maintracks that let you down a grade that went behind the tower & put =
you on a track that ran south to Jersey city where you wound up at =
Pavonia Ave roundhouse.....the site of the old ERIE station. I recall =
coming in from Wanaque one morning & creeping by a bad scene of Stilwell =
coaches all piled up behind the tower on that downhill track, They must =
have split a switch. This would have been about 1962 or so. We stayed in =
Hoboken that day.
As far as speed - the ERIE engineers didn't pay too much =
attention to the limits at the Hoboken terminal. One of the Greenwood =
Lake men told me "When we first came here, they told us '10 mph to =
terminal tower, then 20 mph to Grove St. & 30 mph to the tunnel, but we =
just went to number 8 & got out of town & they (the DL&W officials ) =
dontbother us anymore. As he was relating this, we were racing toward =
the Bergen Hill tunnel & when we entered it a red tongue of flame was =
blasting out of the stack on the old 900 class & the noise was =
deafening. Mostly the guys were very concientious & careful.........I =
didn't mean to imply that they were reckless.
Regards,
WAlter E. Smith

Walt
Did you know Will Stanley? He was an Agent-Operator and when I =
started in 65, he was the Agent in New Castle, PA. Think he might have =
been at Lisbon prior to that but not certain. Cal Banse sent me an =
e-mail telling me that Will died last week.
On the Northern Branch operations.........I saw some of those =
movements in about 1966 and 1967 when I was down there photographing and =
riding some trains. I seem to remember the back-up move was very =
fast-----perhaps over 25 MPH. Do you recall that?

When Trains 62/78 were combined, they were split at Leavittsburg, The 78
would pull down to SN Jct and into the EB siding, make a cut and pull east of
South Leavitt Road (a/k/a Euclid Avenue). Engines would come out the east
end
of the siding and the operator at SN Jct would provide flag protection for
the engines to return to the train. Then 78 would depart 1st Sub to Brier
Hill, Ferrona and on to Meadville, sometimes working at Shenango.
The caboose was already on the east end of the 62 portion along with the
engine(s) that 78 had cut off. Most likely the 78 crew left the 3658 for 62
to
take to Cleveland.
The 62 crew would cut the one unit off of the train, run around the train to
the west end and depart, after any set off or pick up at Leavittsburg. It
was NOT a fast process. When 62 departed from the EB siding, the train had
to
operate against the current of traffic from SN Jct to RB, a distance of
about 1.5 miles, OR, pull west of SN Jct on the 2nd sub, then back over to the
Single Track 2nd sub, then depart for Cleveland on #1 track from SN Jct.,
depending on traffic.
In 1972 SN Jct was quite busy.

I visited the Phillipsburg Plant of Ingersoll-Rand in 1972 ( I think that
was the year---it was when the CNJ pulled out of Pennsylvania).
Cal Banse and I stopped by as there was a rumor that the plant still had an
A-GE-IR box cab switcher. After all of these years, I don't remember if they
did or not, and we were not allowed into the plant due to defense contracts
that were being built at the plant.
The guard or plant manager did talk with us and we were told that ALL of the
A-GE-IR locomotives that were built had some of their steel fabrication,
piping and air systems completed at Phillipsburg. I have not heard otherwise
so
I assume that it is correct. At least the Erie 19-20-21 and 22 should have
been partially born there.
