If there's a "substantial increase," then why significantly reduce the line to single track? I understand the expense of maintaining both, and true, it probably isn't needed with enough passing sidings. CP is pretty friendly with NYS&W, but you're right - CN doesn't have a current NYC terminal. Hmmm..... I'd also like to know why the line is being leased to CNY for only $1/year? I'm assuming it's easier for NS to lease it than to pay to scrap it (and raise the ire of New York State, who funded a big rehab of this line two decades ago) > Then, I wonder if someone has finally figured out that > hauling stuff up and over Sparta Mountain, after hauling it > up and over Gulf Summit and Otisville, might be one mountain > too many, with the ERIE mainline going to the same place in > fewer miles and lower elevations. True, but methinks that NJT wouldn't stand for adding (EEK!) more freight traffic to its lines. > And you can bet that there is state and federal money > involved -- that's YOUR money, folks! Walter Rich has been the master of doing this. The rebuilding of the NYS&W (both northern and southern divisions) has been almost entirely paid for by State funds. Admirable job, too, when you think about it. - Paul - -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
