That's a very neat and succinct description of the plant in Northern days. One addition: The Northern and NYS&W tracks out of Jersey City had to cross the freight tracks from the old tunnel right under the DL&W. At Pavonia (Jersey City) the H&M Tubes were way inland. The "spooky brick building" was at the location of the tube station. In Eeie days, there was an underground connection between the H&M and the Erie; you felt like you were walking halfway back to where you came from. This, in turn, made the ferryboats pretty attractive. You didn't save any time, but it was more pleasant.
