(erielack) Fwd: Inqusitive Questions.

As expected, the computer hasn't been achieving overload from the responses
to my question, about the air hornes on the Lackawanna 4-8-2 1450 class
steamer. This one, from a friend, is worth sharing.

Bob:

        To answer your questions:

1- It wasn't rare on the Lackawanna, but it apparently started with the 1500's. Later, some of the 1600's were so equipped with these 4-trumpet horns, as well as the 1138(4-6-2). The 1150's came from Alco with a single horn and, later, carried steamboat whistles, which were a pleasure to listen to. The Q-4(1934) 1600's were delivered with two horns, back to back, each having a different tone; sort of an E and G musical note. I remember hearing their combined sound countless times; also the steam whistle they carried. There were two "cords" above the engineer's head; one a chain for the steam whistle, the other a rope for the horns.

2- One pull on the cord blew all the trumpets(or bells) of the horn(s), the same as when a diesel chime horn is blown. Two of the reasons I heard for these horns was that it saved steam, and that the sound of horns carried better , in foggy weather, in the Poconos, than did that of steam whistles.

3- Remember, these thinner horns were early versions. I don't know why they were replaced by the thicker kind; maybe the DL wasn't satisfied with them, compared to the newer ones. They also resemble, somewhat, the MU horns, except the MU's were facing down, as you remember.

                  Hope this has been helpful!

                                 Happy New Year!

                                             Jack

Noticed the double horns, or shall I say quadruple horns.
So, To are steam experts out there:

  1. Was this a rare thing?

  2. What other engines got them?

  3. Was there a cord for the foreword horns, and a separate cord for the rear facing horns?

  4. They look very thin compared to the horns on the 4-8-4s and 4-6-4s. Why the difference?
