Bob, One of my old maps (from about 1920 still shows Ferromonre RR tracks) shows a couple of sand pits on the CNJ north of Rt46 in Kenvil along with a couple of sidings. Right at the south end of the "lake". Only sandpit on DL&W shows along with a siding about halfway between 46 and 10. You are correct, probably nearly all of those lakes were sand or gravel pits originally (never use absolutes, as soon as you do, someone will come along with, "...oh no, that one was a spring, and my great grand father dammed it..."!
