RE: (erielack) CLASSIC TRAINS PIX -the ferry boats

The SCRANTON sunk atter piling punctured her hull. She was at the Holland-America Pier with the BINGHAMTON. Several papers showed her down in the river with only one wheel house and the stack visible. The other boats were sold for scrap and wound up in the Arthur Kill around Carteret for many years. Somebody did by the ELMIRA and take her to Perth Amboy. There is a New York City Ship website that has a picture of the ELMIRA partially submerged, and seemingly gutted of all takable items. Go to YAHOO and type in New York City Ferries and I think you'll find the picture. Back in the 1970s there was a small museum display of New York Ferries at the Richmond Terminal of the Staten Island Ferry. One of the name boards of the POCONO was there along with other items. The LACKAWANNA was dieselized but it was not an effective performer compared to the steam boats.
