Just a quick note about photo sizes. Please keep images to 500 KB or less and 
try to make them as small as is practical for the subject material. Large maps
and drawings sometimes need to be larger to preserve details, but many 500 KB
and larger images would be just as useful to the list members as 100 KB
versions.

For list members who are on dialup connections, a 500 KB image will usually
take anywhere from two to six minutes to download, wuite a while to wait.

In addition, the EL list photo archive is now over 250 Megabytes in size and
growing. It's not the hard disk space which concerns me, but additional hard 
disk thrashing during our frequent backups and the bandwidth consumed during
downloading.

JPeg compression can be configured to reduce file sizes in most popular image
processing software such as Adobe Photoshop and JASC's Paint Shop Pro. For
those who have only basic image software with few options there are numerous
commercial, shareware and freeware utilities available for optimizing JPeg
