Please keep images to 500 KB or less and try to make them as small as is practical for the subject material. Large maps and drawings sometimes need to be larger to preserve details, but many 500 KB and larger images would be just as useful to the list members as 100 KB versions. For list members who are on dialup connections, a 500 KB image will usually take anywhere from two to six minutes to download, wuite a while to wait. In addition, the EL list photo archive is now over 250 Megabytes in size and growing. It's not the hard disk space which concerns me, but additional hard disk thrashing during our frequent backups and the bandwidth consumed during downloading. JPeg compression can be configured to reduce file sizes in most popular image processing software such as Adobe Photoshop and JASC's Paint Shop Pro. For those who have only basic image software with few options there are numerous commercial, shareware and freeware utilities available for optimizing JPeg format images.
