Well, folks -- Business cars were, in large part, rolling offices: Hence- "office car specials". An executive could carry with him correspondence, files and materials difficult to move otyherwise, as well as staff. IIRC, EL#300 (ex-D&H#300) was of somewhat lighter construction than Erie #1 and #2, perhaps having been converted from a coach. #1 and #2 were built as office cars and would have brough a better price at sale. As I posted recently, on the Erie the higher ranking officer used the lower number car. When not in use, they could be available at one terminal or another for entertainment of customers or associates. The current Railpace shows NS and BNSF office car special trains on CSX for the DNC.
