Re: (erielack) Speaking of Steam; any steamers after the merger?

The Passaic River Bridge was steam powered, and the only steam powered bridge on the New York Division at the time of the merger.

We had a former Erie steam powered locomotive crane in the M of W Department. It drove the piles for the light towers at the piggyback yard (old A Yard) in Croxton in 1969. I don't remember its exact number, but it had five digits beginning with a 0, in the Erie work equipment series. The operator for that project was Bob Frisbie, from Hawley.

The crane was painted black, of course, and the window sash was red, the same as any self-respecting Erie steam locomotive. Unfortunately, it had a vertical boiler so there was no smokebox front upon which to mount a red number plate.

Not to mention swing bridges. As I recall, the swing bridge over the
Passaic River between Rutherford (Carlton Hill) & Passaic (Passaic Park)
was a steam-operated bridge.
