Speaking of steam on the NJ&NY, look in the current(November) issue of Railfan. Hal Carstens has a couple of photos of Erie K-1's in Spring Valley, one of which was taken in 1953. There's also a piece on Otisville Tunnel, but the focus is the Conrail era. Tom B By the way, Erie steam officially ended in March of 1954, according to several sources I looked up.
