Frankly, after reading the printed email of Bob's that was published and Mike's reply, it seems that something was lost between point A and point B. I believe it is rather obvious that Bob is referring to filler photos not to photographs that are used to illustrate articles. How one could draw a conclusion otherwise is beyond me. Then again, I know Bob and how much of an advocate he is of "members" contributing and having their photographs given preference, since the Diamond (or the web site, hint, hint) is one of the very few vehicles they will ever have to share their work with others. Yes J.J. Young has been very generous over the years with his work (who was the photographer specifically mentioned), but J.J.'s work has been widely seen and he does have his style and locations. I too feel that there are many members out there (and non members too) who's work I would like to see. In fact that is exactly why I am soliciting photographs, especially from members, for the web site. They may not feel their work is "good enough" to be published, but I say if it tells part of the story of the railroads and offers a different perspective than some of the more stock, common shots, it is important and relevant. Share it with others! As for articles? Well how many non members have actually submitted articles to be published in the Diamond in the past 10 or 15 years? Darned few if any I'd bet, unless there is something in the pipeline that is the reason for this coming up in the first place. Although back in the old Erie Railfan days, there were articles from non members published I believe. There are lots of examples where people who aren't EL/Erie/DL&W fans, per se, could write an article of interest to us - such as floor plans of DL&W or Erie Pullmans, for example. People who research Pullman material might be able to extract DL&W/Erie content and provide it to the Diamond. > >I don't see why the Diamond should limit its content to member-provided-only. That, to me, sounds like shooting ourselves in the foot. Getting material for a volunteer publication is difficult - why discourage additional material? Obviously, the author wouldn't get any of the Society's other benefits, as one would assume, but why should the membership at large be denied potentially compelling content due to a rule like this? > > - Paul > > > > ------------------------------
