What happened if someone showed up a half-hour or less before

What usually happened in cases like this was:
If at Greenville, PA or Sharon, PA, someone would arrive 15 minutes ahead
of
the train wanting a ticket to Rancho Left Coast, California. The agent
would say "OK, right--one way ticket to Youngstown----$1.37 please."
The agent would then call the ticket clerk at Youngstown and have them make
the reservations and prepare the ticket and the patron would buy the
balance
of his ticket at Youngstown. Have seen this done at Warren,
Ohio........one
way ticket to Chicago. Thank you Sir.....
For the Pullman car on #6 from Youngstown to Hoboken, the 'space' was held
at Youngstown ticket office. There was a card showing rooms and roomettes
and
this card was filled out in pencil. If someone showed up at Warren and
wanted a Pullman room to Hoboken, the ticket agent would call Youngstown
Ticket
on the phone (company phone, please--no long distance calls) and ask the
ticket
clerk or agent on duty if there was any 'space' available on #6 to
Hoboken.
If so, the ticket was sold---Coach Warren to Youngstown and First Class
Youngstown to Hoboken.
After the train departed Youngstown, the space was sold by the Conductor.
