The Main Line was, naturally, the original line between Suffern and Jersey City that the Erie took over from predecessor railroads when the Erie decided that the ferry from Piermont to New York was not what they wanted. The Bergen County Railroad was a charter device to build a bypass route around the busier parts of the Main Line to speed through freight and passenger trains that didn't need to go through Paterson; it went through an area that was less developed (if you can believe that now). > On another note as I was contemplating a trip to Ohio this summer. The H&M was regulated as a 'real railroad' and PATH is still subject to tighter regulation than subway systems because it is interstate and thus under the FRA. Though intrastate, the Staten Island Railway is also subject to FRA rules, hence its cars are somewhat different from NYC subway cars. ===== Gary R.
