The Mystery Apparatus. I forwarded this photo on to Jimmy Ratchford who worded in the Scranton Diesel Shops starting in the early 50s right on through till CR closed it. He believs that the 950-954 RS2s were delivered with out steam boilers, and in 1954 the Erie Added the boilers. This number 6 brake equipment was probable in the short hood, and had to be placed else where. On RS3s this would normally be under the floor of the cab, but on RS2s there is a fuel tank taking up that space. Thus the next out of the way location was out on the short hood firemans side running board. I talked to Rich Jahn of the ARHS this week, and he says the general consensus on the reason several of the LVs RS2 had this out in the same location is because they had Train Control added in the short hood.
