The first passenger diesels on both roads were F-3's, so the speed was there.  I suspect the idea wasn't.  Probably some hogger looked over on Route 17, saw one on a Peterbilt and said, " Hey! "

Don's question is a good one, one of those that's so obvious as to make one wonder why it hasn't been asked way long time ago.  As to the speed of the F's, the ERIE ran freights at 59 MPH in NY, and faster out west.  Plenty fast enough to catch up to bugs.
