Re: (erielack) S.J. Groves Construction Co. U33Cs



I rode and photographed the railroad several times. The S. J. Groves units 
only had one standard GE control stand. They simply put the loco in reverse 
after dumping at the end of track and shoved back to the cut in West Orange. 
For a short while there was a second short passing track at the top of the 
grade in West Orange which was used by a helper unit employed so longer 
trains could be started on the step grade in the cut. The helper was an RS-2 
that had been upgraded to 1600HP. One unique feature of the groves units was 
a valve mounted on the cab wall by the Engineer's seat which allowed the 
Engineer to control the dumping of the sidedump cars.
