ELHS member Bill Burt did an excellent 3-part article on the River Line in 
Vol. 5, No.1; Vol. 5, No.2; and Vol. 6 No. 1 of The Diamond.  As I recall, 
his article covers the topics you inquire about, along with great photos and 
other history of the line, including the line's ultimate demise under Conrail.
