When did gas arrive? In 1935, my parents bought a house in Radburn, NJ, with a gas stove; in 1937, we moved to Tenafly to a house with not only a gas stove but also a gas-fired steam furnace. The Public Service mains were in place well before WWII. I think I recall the Mark I videos showing white exhaust when the bridge opened. That's steam. Wouldn't a steam plant have to be up to pressure all the time in order to operate expeditiously when called for? And wouldn't that require a licensed attendant at all times? And would a railroad use coal, which it had, rather than oil, which it would have to buy? Hmmm. . . Randy Brown ------------------------------
