The big conversion came after WW2.  IIRC, the first pipeline, the Big
Inch, was built for oil during WW2. I am not sure when the first NG
pipeline as built to the Northeast. Before then the only gas was
manufactured gas and it was much too expensive for home heating.

The above could have been the case.  The oil feed line would have had to
be disconnected each time the bridge opened.  The bridge tender would
connect the line to the supply tank whenever the day tank ran low.
